Rishikesh-Karnprayag railway line is progressing well! This project will not only improve connectivity to the Char Dham pilgrimage sites but also boost the overall development of the region.
The chief project manager aims to have the train running on the track by December 2026. The 125.20 km long railway line will connect Rishikesh to Karnaprayag, traversing five districts of Uttarakhand. The project will reduce travel time, enhance accessibility to the Char Dham pilgrimage sites, and stimulate economic growth in the region.

To provide easy access to pilgrimage sites, develop backward regions, connect new business centers, and serve the local population. The Rishikesh-Karnprayag railway line will significantly enhance connectivity to important cities in Uttarakhand, making it easier for pilgrims and tourists to reach the Char Dham pilgrimage sites. The railway line will connect Rishikesh to Karnaprayag via Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and Gauchar. The project was handed over to RVNL in September 2011, with the detailed estimate approved in 2016. The project involves the construction of 16 tunnels, with primary lining work currently underway.
Excellent progress on the Rishikesh-Karnprayag railway line project! The use of modern machinery and the rapid pace of tunnel excavation are commendable. Average progress of 5 km per month. 28 breakthroughs completed by November 2024. 10 more breakthroughs targeted for completion by March 2025. All breakthroughs to be completed by December 25, 2024, covering 213 km. 6 main tunnels and 6 escape tunnels fully excavated. Longest tunnel (T13) is 9.50 km long. 5 out of 19 major bridges completed. 13 bridges targeted for completion in 2024.
Committees formed to assess and compensate for damage to houses due to tunnel digging. Compensation has been distributed as per the rates demanded by district officials.
Railway officers Amit Yadav & Mangudi ji informed that many development works have been done by the project like hospital in Srinagar, stadium in HNB Garhwal University, road, protective work, renovation of Veer Madhav Singh Bhandari Parishad in Maletha, renovation of Sushila Devi Inter College in Chamoli district, upgradation of road from Kirti Nagar to Khandukhal, upgradation of road from Devprayag to Payal village etc. and many works are being done by CSR. He informed that the contract for blast-free track for laying railway track has been given to JV in July 2024 for Rs 750 crore, the work of which is in progress. The tender process is going on for railway station construction works. It will also be issued in January 2025. He informed that the work of Rishikesh Karnaprayag railway line will be completed on time. He said that by December 2026, trains will start running on Rishikesh-Karnprayag railway line. Deputy General Manager Om Prakash Malgudi and other officials were present on this occasion.
