Café Near Divine Hotel in Tapovan Gutted in Short-Circuit Fire; Locals Douse Blaze After Fire Brigade Delayed by Traffic
A fire broke out at a café operating near Divine Hotel in the Tapovan area of Muni Ki Reti on Sunday afternoon, causing an estimated loss of ₹5 to 6 lakh to the café operator.
According to Inspector Pradeep Chauhan, In-charge of Muni Ki Reti police station, the incident occurred at approximately 1:30 PM. The fire was triggered by a short circuit when an induction cooktop was switched on inside the café. The flames spread rapidly, engulfing the entire premises.
Items destroyed in the fire include a refrigerator, three commercial gas cylinders, and two domestic gas cylinders. Inspector Chauhan confirmed that all cylinders were empty at the time of the incident, preventing a more serious outcome.
The café is operated by Krishna Bagham on rented premises in Tapovan. He had recently stocked the café in preparation for the upcoming Char Dham Yatra season.
Local residents alerted the Muni Ki Reti police station, following which a fire brigade team was dispatched from Narendra Nagar. However, heavy weekend traffic congestion on the Laxman Jhula motor road delayed the team’s arrival. Before the brigade reached the scene, local residents used a submersible pump at the nearby Divine Hotel to bring the fire under control. The fire brigade completed the operation upon arrival.
The incident has highlighted concerns about emergency response access in the densely trafficked tourist zones of Rishikesh during peak weekend hours.
