Three Coaches of Ujjain express Derail During Shunting at Yog Nagari Station; No Casualties Reported
Late Monday night, the quiet of Yog Nagari Railway Station was shattered when the Ujjaini Express — awaiting its early morning run to Ujjain — lurched off the tracks during a routine shunting operation, triggering a night-long emergency response across multiple departments.
The Ujjaini Express had pulled into Yog Nagari at around 6:00 PM, scheduled to depart for Ujjain at 6:15 the following morning. At approximately 9:30 PM, railway staff began moving the train from the platform to the shunting line at Khand Gaon — a standard pre-departure procedure. What followed, however, was anything but routine.
The train’s engine struck the buffer stop at the far end of the shunting line with tremendous force, bringing the entire rake to a sudden, violent halt. The shockwave of the impact bore down with brutal intensity on one of the central coaches — buckling it completely in the middle and sending it off the rails. In all, three coaches sustained damage in the collision. A residential house standing in close proximity to the site added to the gravity of the situation, though the structure was not reported to have been struck.
RPF Inspector Saroj Kumar of Yog Nagari Station confirmed that the incident occurred at 9:42 PM. Crucially, there were no passengers aboard the train at the time — a fact that prevented what could have been a catastrophic loss of life. Reports emerging from the site suggest the accident may have been the result of negligence on the part of the loco pilot, though the Railways have yet to issue any official statement on the cause.
News of the derailment sent officials and personnel from the Railway, RPF, GRP, and Police administration into immediate action. A large crowd had already converged at the scene; police moved swiftly to disperse them. Senior officials from all concerned departments rushed to the site with heavy security deployment, remaining on standby deep into the night as they awaited the arrival of rescue and restoration equipment.
As of late Monday night, no information had been made available regarding the revised departure time of the Ujjain-bound service on Tuesday morning.
