Rupee Hits Historic Low of 95.20 — A Mixed Signal for Rishikesh’s Yoga and Wellness Industry
As the stock markets opened on Thursday morning, the Indian Rupee plummeted by 32 paise against the US Dollar, hitting a historic low of ₹95.20. Rising Brent crude prices and the persistent strengthening of the Dollar are the primary drivers behind this decline.
According to the news agency PTI, foreign exchange traders believe that the risk of further depreciation in the Rupee remains. Rising crude oil prices could further inflate India’s import bill. On Thursday, Brent crude surged to $126 per barrel. Investors remain apprehensive amidst fears of conflict in the Middle East, while the Dollar has gained further strength following the US Federal Reserve’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged.
However, in Rishikesh—the country’s “Yoga City”—this currency volatility is being viewed from a different perspective. Bipin Baluni, President of the Yoga Association, suggests that the rising value of the Dollar could prove beneficial for the yoga industry. According to him, this industry generates substantial foreign exchange earnings for the country and enjoys widespread support.
Rajiv Tiwari, a pioneer in the rafting and wellness industry, also described the situation as positive for the sector. He stated, “This is a moment of optimism for the industry; however, we hope that the war ceases and conditions return to normalcy—at which point, this situation will truly transform into a major boom.”
